This is the first book of the Cairo Trilogy, a moving saga of the emotional struggles of three generations of a Cairo middle-class family in the first half of the twentieth century. Mahfouz, a Nobel winner, grips the readers’ interest with what critics describe as his “enchanting style and sweeping social tapestry”.
